Working with Packaged Workbooks and Zip Files in Tableau

If you do not have administrative rights on your computer, you may encounter problems when you use Internet Explorer to download a Tableau packaged workbook (file extension .twbx) . The file extension may be changed to .zip.
To avoid this problem, download the workbook with Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome.
To work around this problem, manually change the file extension from .zip to .twbx, and then the workbook file can open in Tableau or Tableau Reader as expected.

Correct the problem.

You can correct the problem by changing a security setting for your local intranet zone.

Step 1

Select Start > Control Panel > Internet Options.

Step 2

In the Internet Properties dialog box (Internet Options in XP), select the Security tab.

Step 3

On the Security tab, under Select a zone to view or change security settings, click Local intranet.

Step 4

Under Security level for this zone, click Custom level.

Step 5

in the Security Settings - Local Intranet Zone dialog box, scroll down to Open files based on content, not file extension.

Step 6

Select Disable, and then click OK.

Step 7

Restart Internet Explorer, and try downloading the file again.

Alternative way to correct the problem

Another way to correct this problem, ask your Web server administrator to:
  • Add the following directives to the server config file or to an .htaccess file on your server:

    Add Type? application/twbx twbx

    Add Type? application/twb twb

    OR
  • Add these two lines to the mime types file on Apache:

    application/twbx twbx

    application/twb twb
