I just noticed something new about Terminator 2

I have a very young sister who I recently introduced to the Terminator series. On re-watching the movies with her I noticed something new in T2. In the arcade scene John Connor is playing Missile Defender. We see him straining to keep up, and ultimately losing.

I grew up on Nintendo and Sega Genesis, so I never understood that this was a game you couldn't win. I never played it or any of the games of its generation. But in this old game, from start to finish you are ultimately powerless in the eventual outcome; caught trying to stave off the utterly inevitable. No matter how well you do or how long you last the bombs will eventually get through and everything you knew and loved will die in a nuclear holocaust. The machine is going to beat you and there's nothing in the world you can do about it.

What makes this scene so amazing is how easily it can pass you by and play itself off as just a filler scene of a kid playing an arcade game, when it's really anything but that. It's actually incredibly significant. When I saw this scene for what it was for the first time it blew me away. It's just so subtle and innocuous that it's completely lost on anyone who doesn't understand the nature of the game the boy is playing.
