After recently watching The Martian Extended Cut I felt like it was shaped into a different movie with only a handful of scenes and additional narration by the protagonist.
Especially hard hitting was the added shower tent scene just before the end which showed how extensive the toll on Mark's body from malnutrition and the 90-sol journey in a cramped rover was.
I think all the added scenes made The Martian a better movie. Not necessary a better movie for the wider audience, but a more emotional movie none the less. It benefited from a darker tone.
