Just recently watched this movie again and loved it just as much as the first time I saw it and couldn't help being struck by how it addresses mental illness. I personally think that everyone should see this movie for how it gives such a great portrayal of, not simply mental illness but what an effective community of support can look like.
Too often it seems like mental illness is simply a defining characteristic for a movie character and that is all that it really applies to the movie. I love the story told in this movie because it's not even purely a tale of Lars moving away from his issues but also how much a community can do to help the situation.
We see that it's not always easy to do so and that sometimes the ones closest to the affected can have the hardest time with accepting it. The knee-jerk response or even most logical response to a situation isn't always necessarily the best one for these situations.
That all being said, I do understand that every situation is unique so I apologize if anything I said comes across as flippant to your circumstances. Mental illness affects everyone differently so please don't consider this as me putting all examples into the same category.
