I was lucky enough to see the first screening of Bohemian Rhapsody. Here are my thoughts.

[DISCLAIMER: I DON'T KNOW TOO MUCH ABOUT THE REAL HISTORY OF QUEEN SO I CAN'T REALLY SAY HOW ACCURATE IT WAS THANK YOU FOR COMING TO MY TED TALK]

It really was something else. Before the movie started, Rami told us that this is a celebration of Queen and Freddie, and it 100% is. Although, with that said, it doesn't do it entirely through rose-colored glasses. There's so many exhilarating sequences, from tour montages to just recording the tracks. But well balanced with all the excitement is good look at how Freddie Mercury dealt with his sexuality and other various problems in his life.

The way that these characters interact with each other, especially in the more serious scenes is very genuine and doesn't feel like they're purely playing up melodrama. There's an interaction Freddie has with his Dad towards the end of the movie that has almost no dialogue and even a cynical asshole like me shed a few tears.

Which brings us to Rami's acting; he absolutely knocks it out of the park. For being a guy who's almost typecasted as these solemn, reserved characters, he does such a great job portraying the excitement and pure charisma Freddie Mercury had, along with the scenes where it isn't all peaches and cream.

And damn this movie deserves some kind of achievement in over-dubbing, or Rami Malek is just that good. In a vast majority of scenes, you seriously cannot tell if it's being dubbed or he's actually singing. Regardless, it's completely flawless and paying attention to it never once took me out of the film.

With the help of visual effects, there were so many grandiose and eye-catching shots in this movie that made me feel like a kid again. One shot I keep on replaying in my head over and over again starts up high in the sky, looking down on that massive crowd at Live Aid, comes way down, just above them, and sweeps right over them before going to the stage and getting a close-up of Freddie at the Piano about to begin the set. I should mention that Live Aid closes out the film and is completely flawless, I guarantee it will sweep anyone off their feet. See in in Imax or Dolby for that scene alone.

Lastly, what I loved most about this movie is the editing. This is by far the best editing I've seen in a movie this year. Whether, it's concerts, studio recordings, press conferences, you name it, it's amazing in every scene. It's even more impressive after knowing that a lot of coverage was shot for many scenes, as the actors talked about in the q&a. With so much footage too choose from, this movie is still felt so confident and incredible with its cuts.

Really my only problems were that I would have liked a little more exploration of the entire band's history together, but that's asking for a bit much for a movie that I think ended up being about 2 hours 10 minutes. Plus, just little nitpicks here and there that I can barely even remember.

TL;DR: It's pretty dang good. See it in Imax or Dolby.
