The Golden Globes have come and gone, the SAG and BAFTA nominations have been announced, and the Oscars are just around the corner. No sign of Hereditary. Anywhere.
I am aware that most of these awards aren't fond of the horror genre but I think Hereditary transcends the genre and is simply just a good film with some of the best performances of the year.
When I saw Hereditary I had hope that it would be the horror film of this generation to jump into the awards and show that horror as a genre is evolving and becoming something more than it has been in the past. That it can be just as dramatic and emotional as any drama and evoke as much thoughtfulness as any other genre. I can see a number of categories that Hereditary deserves a spot:
Toni Collette -- Best Leading Actress (probably the best performance of her life, let alone what I've seen this year)
Alex Wolff -- Best Supporting Actor (this kid dug deep and his depression and anxiety hit me hard)
Colin Stetson -- Best Original Score (I can't say enough great things about the music in this film. Probably some of the most effective movie music I can think of)
I know ultimately it doesn't matter and most of these award shows are more popularity contest than anything, but I am severely disappointed that Hereditary isn't receiving more love. Hereditary and this new age of horror deserves more recognition, in my opinion.
