I decided to put on Kings of Summer in the background while I work. I find it weird that I don't know anyone [of my movie nerd friends] who has seen this. It's about a group of three friends who decide to run away and live in a janky house they built themselves. I only found about it from my cousin back in 2014 when I was looking for something to watch over the weekend. Honestly, I was a bit apprehensive about watching it because I thought it was some sort of Project X/American Pie type of movie. Boy was I wrong, so glad I gave it a shot.
I just love the vibe of the movie and the way it's shot. This particular scene especially warms my heart. It perfectly encapsulates the feeling of being young and goofing off with your boys during summer. It takes me back to how me and my cousins spend our summers back in the day. Funnily enough, I did actually live this movie (without the running away part) when I helped my cousin build his farm house in the middle of a forrest during one of my breaks in college. Shame I still haven't had a chance to spend a night there.
I'm surprise at how many notable people are in this. Nick Offerman, Megan Mullally, Alison Brie, Tom Middleditch, Kunail Nanjiani, Clark Gregg, to name a few.
It really sucks that the director, Jordan Vogt-Roberts, doesn't have that much in his cinematic resume. What's super weird to me is he followed this up with Kong: Skull Island. Skull Island is the best Monsterverse movie by far, and I really love the fact that he wears his fandom on his sleeve. The Akira and Evangelion references on Skull Island are top notch. And the dude rubs elbows with practically everyone nerds like to the point he even has a cameo in Death Stranding.
Anyways, go watch it. It's a chill movie to watch when you want to relax and reminisce about the time when summers actually meant having time off.
