How do some directors make a living while barely releasing any movies?

Jonathan Glazer, the director of The Zone of Interest and Under The Skin, has only directed 4 films in total, and only 2 within the past 10 years, and I can’t imagine either of them yielded a big pay check for him. Similarly, Oscar winning director Jane Campion took a 12 year break between directing Bright Star and The Power of The Dog, neither of which are huge box office hits. I’m confused and a little bit fascinated: How do some directors manage to make a living with such an irregular release schedule?
