What is a quote from a movie that you took to be a common expression and went on to use in your life, only to be met with confusion from others?

I have personally used the line from Pineapple Express “you sowed your own poison” to describe someone who planted their own trap, or sealed their own negative fate, and until recently, no one has questioned the phrasing. It must make sense, after all, it sounded good enough to me for me to think it was a common saying. Alternately, enough people recognize its use in the movie that they accept my use of it in conversation.

However, the other night, someone challenged my use of it and met it with confusion, leading me to look it up, and lo and behold, I found that its origin is James Franco’s character Saul. I suppose it could be a testament to Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg’s writing, or maybe my own tenuously stonerish grasp on the english language.

Has anyone else had a similar experience?
