I'm not a Godzilla maniac - in fact, this is the first Japanese Godzilla film I've watched - so from the perspective of an outsider this movie was incredible.
All of Godzilla's forms are terrifying in a primal way. The effects and the cinematography are so well done that everything feels hyper-realistic. It feels like you're watching a real crisis unfold.
This sense of realism is helped by the fact that the cast is full of people who come across as just...regular people trying to deal with an impossible situation. There are no action heroes here. Even though 75% of the movie consists of people in a boardroom talking, it's never boring.
When the film does turn on the gas, the visuals are astounding. I imagine that you could have heard a pin drop in the theatre during its' most intense scenes. There are images in here that shook me and I won't soon forget them - especially its' second form.
Overall the movie completely blew me away and digging into the subtext and themes behind it is proving to be even more fascinating. Would love to hear your thoughts and, if you haven't seen it, I highly encourage you to avoid spoilers and go in completely blind if possible.
