Not too sure how to word this, but one of my all time favourite tropes is where a main character has to conceal the fact that who they really are is seen as unacceptable/evil/frightening in their world. It's even juicier if they have a close relationship with someone who would be horrified if they found out the truth about them. Examples are things like:
-
Female character disguised as a man in historic setting
-
Black character disguised as white in 1960s USA (or other racist society)
-
Exorcist who is secretly a demon
-
Cop who doesn't realise that the criminal/vigilante they're chasing is actually their relative/lover
-
Werewolf/alien whose close friend/lover/relative is a werewolf/alien hunter
-
A character who has to hide supernatural abilities that make them incredibly dangerous and threatening to society, whether they intend to be or not.
Genre doesn't matter at all, it can be absolutely anything as long as there's that tension of hiding the secret is there, and ideally the secret gets discovered at some point. Obviously the superhero genre is rife with secret identity stuff, but it's great if the secret is specifically scorned/undesirable.
I'd welcome any recommendations for films (or shows or even books) with this trope :)
