Typically, Tableau dimension field names include references to generations from Essbase and are not descriptive of the values in that generation. For example, take a look at the fields listed under Product in the Data window. Without placing the fields in the view, it may be difficult to identify the columns that these field names represent. To make working with your Essbase data easier to work with, modify the description of the generation references.

Changing the Essbase cube settings
Step 1
Open Essbase Administration Services.
Step 2
Select the appropriate database in the left pane, expand the table you are interested in, and select Outline.
Step 3
In the main window, right-click the dimension to which you want to add a description, and select Generations.
Step 4
Select each generation to be changed and type a new name, and then click OK when finished.
Step 5
Click Save, and click Close.
Step 6
Open the Tableau workbook that contains the view you want to update.
Step 7
Select the data source in the Data menu, and select Refresh. The generation names have been updated.
