Resolving Tableau Issues with Publishing after Installing Certificate

After installing a SSL certificate, you may be unable to log in to Tableau Server from Tableau Desktop to publish a workbook because of “Internet communication error: The certificate authority is invalid or incorrect” error message. In addition, you may see an invalid certificate error when connecting to the short name (i.e., the DNS or machine name) of Tableau Server.

These error messages may display because of the following issues:
  • You are trying to connect to Tableau Server using a short name or a URL that is not the Common name on the certificate. Verify the common name on the certificate. When accessing Tableau Server, use the name listed in the “Issued to” section of the certificate rather than the short name you used previously.
  • The SSL certificate is not signed by a trusted authority or is not installed in your browser. Verify that the certificate has been installed in your browser. In the case of Internet Explorer (IE), this should be installed in the "Trusted Root Certification Authorities" folder.
In some cases, installing the certificate through a browser will not install the certificate at the OS level and Tableau Desktop will remain unable to publish to Tableau Server. When this scenario occurs, it will be necessary to manually install the certificate at the OS level using the steps below.
