In Tableau Desktop 8.0, the default dashboard size is set to the Desktop preset, which is 1000 pixels by 800 pixels. In earlier versions, the dashboard is set to fill the entire window in which it’s being displayed, as shown in the following image.
If a dashboard is set to automatically fit the space within a window, it scales differently for each viewer’s screen or window size. If a dashboard is set to a larger fixed size, scroll bars appear for users viewing it on smaller screens. If you want to ensure that the dashboard appears with a consistent layout that works well on a variety of screen sizes, you can specify the size you want.
Set the dashboard size in Tableau 8.0
Step 1
With the dashboard open in Tableau Desktop, in the Dashboard window on the left, and in the Dashboard section, select a new Size setting from the drop-down list.
Step 2
Specify additional size settings according to the behavior you selected.
For example, set a custom width and height, specify a range, and so on.
Set the dashboard size in Tableau 7.0
Step 1
With the dashboard open in Tableau Desktop, in the Dashboard window on the left, under Size, click Edit.
Step 2
In the Page Setup dialog box, select one of the following behaviors:
- Automatic: The dashboard automatically resizes to fill the application window. This is the default behavior.
- Exactly: The dashboard always remains a fixed size, and you can select from preset sizes or specify a custom width and height. If the dashboard is larger than the window, scroll bars appear.
- Range: The dashboard scales within the specified minimum and maxium sizes. If the window size is outside the range, scroll bars appear on smaller sizes, or white space is added to larger sizes.
- At Least: The dashboard automatically fills the window in which it’s displayed, but it does not scale smaller than a specified minimum size. When the window is set to a smaller size, scroll bars appear.
- At Most: The dashboard automatically fills the window in which it’s displayed, but it does not scale larger than the specified maximum size. When set to a larger size, white space is added.
Step 3
Specify additional size settings according to the behavior you selected.
For example, select a preset or custom size, specify the minimum and maximum range in pixels, and so on.
Step 4
Click OK.
