By default, views connected to live data require users to log in to the data source with a database username and password. However, you can configure Tableau Server to embed these database credentials, so that your users can pass through the login process and go directly to their views.
Note: To configure Tableau Server for embedded database credentials, you will need to have administrator access to the Tableau Server.
Set up embedded database credentials
Step 1
Open a web browser and log in to the Tableau Server. On the Admin tab, display the Maintenance page.
Step 2
Select the Embedded Credentials check box.
Unless you need to do other maintenance, log off of Tableau Server. You will need to log in again later in this exercise.
Step 3
In Tableau Desktop, connect to a data source for which you can manually authenticate with a database username and password.
The following data sources do not allow this: Microsoft Excel workbooks, plain text (.csv) files, Microsoft Access databases, Tableau extract files, or Microsoft SQL database running in mixed-authentication mode. However, many of the other available data sources allow (or require) you to authenticate manually.
Step 4
Create a view that you want to publish to the server. When you’re done, select Server > Log On.
Step 5
Select Server > Publish Workbook, and in the lower-left of the Publish Workbook to Tableau Server dialog box, clickAuthentication.
Step 6
In the Authentication drop-down list, select Embedded password.
This allows users to access the view without entering their database credentials.
