The pie mark type can be useful in showing simple proportions to the relative whole. For example, pie marks are effective when you want to show the percentage of profit for a product by geographic location.
The example described here uses the pie mark type in conjunction with the filled maps mark type to show the percentage of profit for office supplies, relative to the total profits by state. The data source is the Superstore sample.

Create the view
Step 1
Open a new workbook and connect to the Superstore sample.
Step 2
Click the State field, and then in the Show Me panel, select the Filled Map view type.
Step 3
From the Measures pane, drag Profit to Color on the Marks card.
Step 4
Drag another instance of the Latitude field to the Rows shelf.
Step 5
Right-click the second Latitude field on the Rows shelf, and select Dual Axis.

Step 6
In Tableau 7.0, do the following:
- In the Marks shelf drop-down list, select Multiple Mark Types.
- Select Pie from the Marks menu.
In Tableau 8.0, do the following:
- On the Marks card, select the second Latitude field to bring it to top.
- In the drop-down list of view types, select Pie.
Step 7
Complete the view:
- From the Measures pane, drag Sales to Size.
- From the Dimensions pane, drag Department (or Product Category in 7.0 versions) to Color.
- If necessary, use the Size slider to enlarge the pie charts.
