ELI5:How did The Big Short afford to pay it's big name actors (Ryan Gosling, Steve Carell, Brad Pitt, Christian Bale, plus other recognizable actors) on a budget of $28 million?

If the average budget for a hollywood movie is $139,000,000 (http://ift.tt/1FYTv2M) and these movies seem to only be able to cast 2 or 3 big names actors, then how did The Big Short pull it off? Morgot Robbie and Max Greenfield both made short cameos as well.
