I think some heads at Paramount might roll over this one. They've already had a terrible year (with their major releases all bombing or disappointing financially). Their big arty "horror" flick has now disappointed as well.
It's also not doing well at the box office. It will make (at most) $8 million this weekend, far from the $12-15 million Paramount was hoping for.
The majority opinion of my fellow box office junkies and I at /r/boxoffice is that this should have been treated as an art house release. Let the buzz over the film build over time and slowly expand it. This never should have been in wide release right away in 2,000+ theaters.
It will be really interesting to see what Darren Aronofsky directs now after the near-universal audience rejection of this film. This could become a cult favorite in the future (since reaction among many movie buffs on /r/movies seems to be mostly positive), but it without a doubt alienated general audiences.
