Have you ever realized halfway through a documentary that you disagree with the director?

I just had a weird experience watching the documentary the Seven Five. It's about police corruption in a Brooklyn precinct in the late 80s, primarily focusing on two cops who stole cash and drugs, partnered with a local drug dealer to give protection, and eventually started dealing themselves. The movie has interviews with both cops as well as their accomplices and even the drug dealer they worked with. Going into the movie I generally was of the opinion that these guys were...bad. And not just corrupt, but real lowlifes who did significant harm to their community. But as the movie went on I could tell that the movie sympathized with them, to the point where when toward the end when one cop rats them out, that cop is framed as a villain.

When that happened the rest of the movie came into focus, that the director was featuring these guys as sort of cool badasses who sure, they did bad things, but isn't this just a great ride? He even lets the drug dealer brag about the women he fucked and how noble he was in his work. It really, really left a bad taste in my mouth, as if the director was one of those guys who watches Goodfellas or Scarface and thinks, "those guys are the best."

Has anyone else had a similar experience? It could be with fictional movies too but I feel like this happens more with documentaries since they usually come with a set POV from the director.
