Rewatched True Grit (2010) last night.

Sometimes I wonder if the Coen brothers ever get annoyed that they're so good at making movies that people can't keep up with how many masterpieces they've made. I mean, nobody talks about True Grit. But honestly, everything in that movie is amazing.

Jeff Bridges as Rooster Cogburn is out of this world, Matt Damon as the ultra-proud Texas Ranger Labeouf is the perfect foil to Jeff Bridges drunken old marauder, and Josh Brolin and Barry Pepper as the duel-antagonists was perfect casting. And Hailee Steinfeld nails Maddie Ross in her first big screen role, which has to be a difficult task for any child actor.

The setting is beautiful all throughout the movie. The cinematography is stylish and compliments a western aesthetic but also brings a modern touch to it, and the dialogue is poetic and endearing and deliberate. What I love about it is the absence of contractions in alot of the script. The "You are not" instead of the "You aren't" or "I will not go" instead of "I won't go." This kind of dialogue lends it self well to humor of the coen brothers.

Here are a few great scenes from the movie:

The Negotiation

The Bear Man

Killing At The Cabin

Shooting Contest

And the Soundtrack is perfect.

Anyways this is just a movie that I don't think gets brought up enough. Admittedly, it's a movie I forgot about myself until I saw it on TV last night. It's kind of like A Serious Man in that way, whereas I forget about the film and then when I see it I can't believe I forgot about it in the first place.

Love this movie, really can't wait for Buster Scruggs.
