Movies were a big part of my childhood, just like most Gen-xers. We grew up on campy flicks like Spaceballs, Big Trouble in little China, Ice Pirates, Toxic Avenger and Flash…..aaaaa-aaaah. And not so campy ones like Indiana Jones, Star Wars, Terminator, Aliens and Blade Runner. I found out as I got older that folks my age would constantly use references and lines from these movies in every day lingo. I also found out that the newer generation of kids had NO idea what we are talking about.
So I’ve spent the last couple years catching my kids up on the movies of my childhood, everything from The Secret of Nihm and Watership Down, to the Running Man and the Last Starfighter. There has been more than enough moments of long stares of “what the hell did I just watch” from the teenagers as the credits and laser induced music rolled by.
Next on tap was Logans Run. I haven’t seen this movie since I was young but I loved it alot, the idea of this dystopian future was amazing to me, the made-for-tv version played every once in awhile on random TV channels growing up including a short lived TV series run.
The made-for-TVness of it was apparently my downfall….
Within the first 20 minutes Logan was playing dial-a-whore after a long day of work. Within an hour they’re running through a flat out Orgy room, and after a dip in freezing cold water there is a gratuitous “we should take our clothes off” (for 20 seconds then put them back on) scene.
Needless to say I remembered none of this and it found me in many awkward moments with my 13 and 16 year old diving for the remote and FFWD button. Later on I realized why I never saw these scenes… because I saw the made for TV version…
"Hey brother remember when dad made us watch that movie with the orgy when we were kids?"
*facepalm*
