They are only a few months into production so it would definitely be possible. The reason for the recasting is LeBron James is no longer fit to play the part. If this sequel is anything like the first movie he has no ground to act like Jordan’s character did. Although a children’s movie, the first Space Jam was rooted in a plot to help the Looney Toons from being abducted and forced into working in horrible working conditions as well as NBA stars regaining their autonomy and personal talent from a foreign entity, the Monstars.
With LeBron recently backing a government who forces people into working in horrible working conditions, known for political dissidents disappearing, and taking away autonomy from their citizens, I don’t think he would have any standing to pretend to fight that, even in a children’s movie. The teenage protester who was shot in the heart by Chinese police in Hong Kong and Daryl Morey voicing support for the protesters are not “miseducated” as LeBron has said they are.
They are fighting for the ideals of freedom and autonomy; the morals the first Space Jam taught to children that LeBron has turned his back to. I think it would be disappointing to see an authoritarian play the role of a liberator, even in a children’s movie setting. That’s why Warner Brothers should recast the lead in Space Jam 2.
I think someone like Enes Kanter, although not as good a player as LeBron, should play the role as he has first hand experience with fighting against abduction and authoritarianism. Turkey is trying to arrest him for standing up for freedom. He isn’t allowed to see his family due to his beliefs. He would be able to defend the Looney Toons while actually meaning it.
Edit: a lot of y’all are happy to dismiss China’s influences on our media and freedoms and apparently to some of you, one must be a child to disagree with you on that. The Communist Party of China appreciates your ardent support and is harvesting an organ for your family from an unwilling Uighur Muslim. 15 social points for you.
