Listen: I’m not saying he’s not a genius. He is ABSOLUTELY a genius, and a hyper-charismatic one at that. He dreamed up themes and ideas that Hollywood still uses today, and Terminator, Star Stars, etc x 100 would be shadows of themselves without his creativity. Never has a person so outside Hollywood so dramatically changed Hollywood, and that in-and-of-itself is amazing.
But his Dune would have been absurd. Not only did his previous films lack structure and coherence—important qualities for a story as detailed as Dune—but his rewrites were ridiculous. Having [SPOILERS] a Christ-story with a Spartacus ending, all while a cast of lunatics fight for the spotlight, would have been a disaster. Can you imagine Dali, who signed on as a joke, act with Mick Jagger, who’s ego is as big as a sand worm, in the same scene? Disastrous.
Listen, I’m not saying I wouldn’t watch it—and love it. I’m just saying, the doc is a better story than it would have been a movie.
Sorry for the rant, I’m a bit tipsy. But that’s my story and I’m sticking with it. Fear is the little death, yada yada yada.
