The Fisher King (1991)

A perfect sunday movie.

Filled with such wonderful performances, direction and soundtrack. It was a treat to watch it. I'm not sure if it'll be my favourite movie of the year but it is something that I'll easily rewatch. Robin Williams gives a performance of a life time and that is saying something considering his beautiful performances in Good Will Hunting and Good Morning Vietnam. Mercedes Ruehl (I'd first seen her in Frasier, which only made me love her even more here) makes her presence felt abundantly.

I'd only watched 12 Monkeys but that must have been back when I was 9 or 10, so it flew over my head. Years went by and the first real Terry Gilliam film I finally watched was The Zero Theorem and hated it and after watching 12 Monkeys it was clear we'd gotten off on the wrong foot and today I checked out this beautiful movie. A bit whimsical and bitter sweet but definitely something that can ease someone into Terry Gilliam territory.

This sums up the movie for me - -

Following Robin Williams' death, a re-appraisal of the film on RogerEbert.com stated that "no Williams film can hit harder — or be so fully consoling in such heartbreaking circumstances — than The Fisher King", where his character "gradually simmers to a boil of bristling insecurities, terror and agonizing internalized pain".

An easy, 5/5.
