Please do not try to empathize with the employees by saying any variation of "it sucks you have to work today." It will ring hollow and honestly will probably just make them mad at you because if you weren't there, then they wouldn't have to work.
Instead just wish them happy holidays and/or simply thank them for working. And please pick up your trash to make their jobs a little easier.
