Notable Box Office Stories:

  • Avengers: Infinity War (cont.) - For a film all about bringing balance to the universe, the box office has been extremely unbalanced lately as all competitors have given Infinity War as much space as it wants. The film had a great third weekend dropping 46% to come in #1 for third weekend in a row with $61.8M. However the more interesting news was in China where the film finally opened to a massive $200M in the country. That is the second highest Chinese opening ever behind Fate of the Furious in local currency (RMB 1.352B for Fate vs RMB 1.266B for Infinity War) but do to a better exchange rate Infinity War is now the best Chinese debut in USD. It's also the first time ever a film has debuted to $200M+ in more than one territory. That impressive opening plus a general worldwide dominance means the film has cracked into the top 5 highest grossing films in just three weeks of release with $1.6B so far. It is only $70M away from the lifetime gross of the 4th place spot Jurassic World (which it should easily pass) and then it faces the next big hurdle, becoming the first MCU film to crack $2B. The film is in prime reach to do so, but faces actual competition next week with Deadpool 2 and then followed by Solo (which is tracking better than redditors would love to admit). But both of those franchises aren't major worldwide forces especially in Asian countries so expect Infinity War to still march on unopposed to an easy $2B haul.

  • Life of the Party - Quite frankly the fact any movie not called Infinity War is making money is a minor miracle so in a sense the latest Melissa McCarthy vehicle Life of the Party opening to #2 with $18.5M isn't THAT bad. However when you consider where the film lands in terms of McCarthy's entire career, yeah it's not looking so great. The film, which is the third McCarthy film directed and written by her husband Ben Falcone, was the worst debut for any McCarthy comedy film dropping below previous "winner" Tammy which still managed to crack over $20M. At least the film managed to top previous Falcone/McCarthy films in Cinemascore where it scored a B while the others scored a terrible C+. However this downward slope for McCarthy has not been the most promising and if she doesn't get a hit like Spy soon she may not be on all the posters with a tassel hitting her in the face or whatever other poster I'll be forced to see on every billboard in this city for the next three months.

  • Breaking In - Speaking of extreme billboarding, the other film who's marketing I've see literally on every street corner in my town (I have grown to hate/love the tagline "revenge is a mother") finally opened this week to a solid #3 with $16.5M. The film starring Gabrielle Union in her own Taken-esque revenge thriller was never going to be a huge player but with a $6M budget the film is already opening well above expectations. The film played to an audience that was 65% female and 53% over the age of 30 so it targeted its mom crowd well and made solid bank because of it. This won't be a huge hit but its a solid earner and I guess it's a form of progress that a boring mediocre mid-range action thriller can star a woman of color. To me true progress in film diversity is when the most boring and safe genres are diverse.
