The Joker received an eight minute standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival. Eight minutes of people clapping, presumably during the end credits.
Do people not get bored? Is it a tradition? Is it almost a system where the length of the clap is an indication of the scale of enjoyment - I mean a literal scale, where people know the length of their clap will be reported in the media, and therefore keep it going as long as necessary?
Outside of a curtain call, where people are coming up in single file, I can't imagine clapping so continuously out of pure genuine joy at a screen.
I can think of engagements I've witnessed, where everyone claps and whoops for a minute, and wipes their tears, and then moves on to talking about the wedding, congratulating each other. I can't imagine clapping at the couple for a full eight minutes without it becoming a rictus grin.
