When a trope becomes a cliche, people start mocking how overused it is. Instead movies start making you think it is going in a direction only to surprise you by going in another one. But after a while, the subversions becomes so common that it outright becomes rare to find straight examples. So have you ever seen a movie that caught you off guard by simply playing its tropes straight? You expect the movie to try and subvert you any second, but it never happens. Thus it ironically subverts your expectations by choosing not to subvert your expectations.
