Using Tabbed Views and Security in Tableau

You can use tabs to interact with different views, sheets, and dashboards in a workbook for easier and more intuitive navigation. This article reviews the security implications with tabbed views so administrators can plan Server permissions accordingly.

Using tabbed views

Suppose after creating a view, you want to publish the workbook. In the Publish Workbook dialog box in Tableau Desktop, there is an option to Show Sheets as Tabs. This option is only available for users that have the Publish right.
When published, each sheet becomes a tab that can be used to navigate through the workbook.

Disabling tabbed views in Server

While tabbed views have the advantage of easy navigation, keep in mind that this setting will override any sheet-level security. If you have workbooks that require sheet level security, you must disable the Show Sheets as Tabs option.
For workbooks that have already been published with tabbed views, an administrator on the Server may disable this option using the steps below.

Step 1

Log in to Tableau Server with your administrator username and password.

Step 2

Navigate to the list of workbooks, and select the workbooks you want to disable tabs.

Step 3

For Tableau Server 8.0 and later, click Tabs > Hide Tabs.
For Tableau Server 7.0 and earlier, first open the Actions toolbar at the top of the workbook list, then select Tabs > Hide Tabs.

A confirmation message displays at the top of the page.
