Notable Box Office Stories:

  • Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation - While Hollywood is always looking for the next megahit franchise there is something to be said for dependability and stability. There seems to be no more dependably solid franchise out right now then the Hotel Transylvania series, the third of which opened this weekend to #1 with $44.1M. That's right in line with the previous two which also opened over $40M but below $50M. It is isn't just gross but the production as well that is just steady as a rock. Like clockwork each film comes out every three years, each one costs $80M, each one has the same director Genndy Tartakovsky (creator of Samurai Jack and Dexter's Laboratory), and other than one notable voice shake-up it's maintained a solid cast. It's so rare that a film franchise like this either doesn't fall apart due to studio greed, unmatched expectations, ego, or a million other things is kind of amazing. Hotel Transylvania won't go down in animation history or box office glory (though the franchise is now $70M away from passing $1B overall) but it's a great example that sometimes being right on track is the best way to go, even if it's not the most exciting course.
  • Skyscraper - Once again it seems with US audiences when it comes to Dwayne Johnson the property matters more than the man as his new venture to single handedly fight a building performed well under expectations opening at a pretty weak #3 with $25.4M. The film, who's advertisements mostly focused on an epic leap off a crane, had ample room to open at least above Ant-Man and the Wasp considering (see below) but couldn't even manage that. Now savvy viewers might notice all the talk in the film about how the titular skyscraper is located in Shanghai and yes indeed you don't just set things in China for aesthetic or story reasons any more! Yup this is in fact a Chinese co-production with Legendary Pictures and Seven Bucks producing with Universal distributing. As such the film's chances to earn back its $125M budget lie overseas but since it has yet to open in the Middle Kingdom we'll have to wait to see. But word on the street is that Universal might at best get 25% of the Chinese gross so unless it's a huge hit over there it will be more of a boon for the Chinese producers than the US. Sorry Rock, guess you'll just have to cash your massive Jumanji checks instead.
  • Sorry to Bother You - This week saw the wide release expansion of the critically acclaimed bizarro Sundance hit which managed to sneak into the top 10 at #7 with $4.2M. That's pretty solid for a film in less than 1,000 theaters in the middle of summer which is usually not kind to this kinds of odd unique fair. The film directed/written by rapper Boots Riley and starring hot up-and-comers like Lakeith Stanfield and Tessa Thompson premiered at Sundance to rave reviews but surprisingly was not snatched up by the more likely candidate A24 but rather Annapurna Pictures. The film production/distribution company has made a name for itself as a pet project of billionaire Megan Ellisson that's funded extremely risky projects by the likes of Paul Thomas Anderson, David O. Russel, and Kathryn Bigelow. However last year the company attempted a new arm by distributing films as well. The results were pretty disastrous as they released two well reviewed films (Detroit and Professor Marston & The Wonder Women) to terrible runs in the US. With Sorry to Bother You they are pushing extremely hard on social media, with Boots Riley and other members of the cast and crew try to call it a social movement to see if unique stories about black culture can hit the mark. So far this more tepid slower rollout seems to be doing well for the film but it will be interesting to see how Annapurna approaches the film as it expands in the coming weeks.
  • Eighth Grade - While the summer blockbuster season seemed to give us a pretty mediocre weekend, that did push some people to cinema for more indie fair. The most notable of these was Eighth Grade, the debut film from mega success comedian/singer Bo Burnham which scored an excellent limited debut opening with $252K in 4 theaters, a per theater average of $63,071 which is the best of 2018 so far. The film about an awkward eighth grade girl growing is a rare production and distribution from A24 and carries major producer powers with Scott Rudin in the executive seat. It's clear A24 is hoping to have a summery repeat of the success of Lady Bird last year which still remains their biggest hit. Still a debut in LA and NY does not guarantee wide release success so it will be interesting to see this one expand, especially if it can capture the interest of the tween market.
